A typical problem is having a bad ground to the instrument cluster (screws don't necessarily make a good ground). Its easier to work on in this configuration. This will allow the bulbs to work even when the dash is turned out. If the lamps have been replaced then run a jumper ground wire between the backshell of the instrument cluster and the dash chassis of the car. Blackened bulbs put out a lot less light than new ones. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the 'on' or 'accessory' position. You don’t need to start your car, but you do need power running to the lights. Method 1 Checking the Dimmer Switch 1 Turn your vehicle and headlights on. The bulbs should be new and never blackened. Disconnect your vehicles battery and manually replace the dashboard lightbulbs to get them lit up again. If the instrument cluster is removed or turned out, check all bulbs having a blue-red stripe wire attached. One splice goes to the left side of the instrument panel, a second goes to the right side of the instrument panel, and a third goes to the shift indicator and also to the radio. From the fuse block, the wiring (blue-red stripe) goes up into the harness where it is spliced several directions. If not, then its possible the fuse is blown or another problem. The output of the rheostat is a variable voltage applied to a terminal in the left front part of the switch (you'll see a blue-red stripe wire leaving the headlight switch. The rheostat is turned to vary the dash light intensity. A circuit breaker in the headlight switch applies 12 volt power to the rheostat located on the front of the headlight switch.
